Sunday 19th
Septembe
The accommodation gets 8/10, losing points for a frosty reception but gaining points for having a bath.
The tide was in when we left our accommodation so we had to take the torturous route along the rocks to get onto the waymarked path.
Looking back at Runswick village, the tide is in making it
difficult to get from the village to the waymarked path
After 5 miles of coastal path we reach Sandsend and have another sit on a seafront seat for an energy bar and drink. We watch families arrive on the beach for the day with wind breaks, chairs and reading matter having walked 25 yards from their car, this contrasts greatly from our little adventure. Another 3 miles of walking and we reach Whitby, well known to both of us, so we just plough through the crowds gathered on a Sunday for Fish & Chips or Candy Floss, the sound of the amusement arcades makes us hurry up and wish we were back in isolation on the moors. Again we are seeing the great contrasts in recreational activities of people on their one or two days off work, for some the buzz of a busy town with crowds of people for others its the isolation of walking in the countryside. No guesses for which one I would choose. The 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey are climbed then onward along the coastal path with many descents and assents. Getting rather tired now and my blister is just as bad, I am trying to ignore it, we both find that if we stop for even 2 minutes the body stiffens up and you start away again walking like even older men.
We are meeting our wives at Runswick Bay, we understand at 4-30pm. But as we arrive precisely at 4-30pm we find our accommodation first, the Bramblewick B & B, then go looking for the ‘support party’, however for whatever reason they do not arrive until 6-00pm, (some support) The accommodation is in the old part of town and is not the best we have stayed in, so we go to Whitby for dinner. A superb meal was had at Trenchers a fish restaurant that is absolutely faultless, makes up for the poor accommodation.
